Amanda Zhao’s case reaches PM’s right hand man
CIV – PM Stephen Harper’s right hand man, secretary of state for multiculturalism Jason Kenney, was moved by Amanda Zhao’s story and promised he would discuss the issue with the minister of justice.
Kenney and his aide visited Ming Pao’s Vancouver headquarters yesterday. He talked about a number of issues, including the comfort women bill. A reporter raised Amanda Zhao’s case with him. At first, Kenney was only vaguely aware of it. After listening to a reporter describing the background of Amanda’s story and Yao Baoying’s (Amanda’s mom) wish to come to Canada to demand justice herself, Kenney took out his pen and jotted notes on the back of the reporter’s business card.
“Interesting,” Kenney said.
Kenney was especially sympathetic when he heard that the health of Yang and her husband is failing and are worried that they would never see justice served when they’re still alive.
Kenney agrees that it’s necessary that the case be followed up on.
Though he is not responsible for Zhao’s case, Kenney said, but since he’s now acknowledged about it, he’s willing to relay the message to the minister of justice Rob Nicholson.
Kenney is within Harper’s inner circle and is believed to be influential in the government’s decision making. He was a key person in helping the “comfort women” motion passing in the parliament last week.
Meanwhile, DOJ’s spokesperson Alain Charette said the department would like to invite Yang to officially file a request for a meeting with the minister.
