Bernier bashes Harper’s ‘dictator’ style of rule: Couillard

This perhaps is the BEST story in this election campaign. Bravo Ms Couillard! You’ve added so much colours to this boring month of October. Thank you. :)

CBC - In her book, Couillard writes that Bernier, a star candidate for the Conservatives in Quebec who was given the foreign affairs portfolio by Harper in 2007, was personally opposed to sending Canadian troops to Afghanistan and often fought with the Prime Minister’s Office over Harper’s “dictator” style of leadership.

Couillard also contends that Bernier, an active runner, was constantly concerned about his own physical appearance and frequently criticized the physical shape of his boss, complaining that Harper had a paunch, ate badly and constantly drank Pepsi.

National Post – Former Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier removed the classified briefing notes that cost him his job from his own briefcase and asked her to throw them in the garbage, charges his ex-girlfriend, Julie Couillard, in a new book about to hit the stands.

According to LaPresse, which obtained a copy of the book before its scheduled release date, Ms. Couillard paints Mr. Bernier as the author of his own demise. He was forced to resign after she made public the fact he had left the documents at her Laval, Que., home.

Ms. Couillard recounts in the 300-page book that Mr. Bernier didn’t like computers so he constantly dragged around mountains of documents. Cleaning up his briefcase in a hurry one morning, he dumped a pile of documents on her kitchen counter, she says.

“Can you put this in the garbage for me,” he asked, adding “I would prefer that you wait for garbage day to do it, after all they are confidential documents.”

In her book, Ms. Couillard paints a portrait of Mr. Bernier as a narcissistic intellectual lightweight who was constantly complaining to her about Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“When he was alone with me he never stopped talking against his leader. He reproached him for all kinds of things that very often had nothing to do with his ability as a prime minister; he was fat, he had a belly, he wasn’t in shape, he spent his time drinking Pepsi.”

Ms. Couillard says Mr. Bernier opposed the war in Afghanistan and also recounts an incident in which Mr. Bernier, a former aide to Bernard Landry, told her that the independence of Quebec was inevitable, he had no problems with it and was waiting for it.
