China market still far away for Canada

International trade minister Stockwell Day says Canada is planning to open 6 trade offices in China in a Board of Trade luncheon last Thursday.

However, the most sought-after pact, the ADS or Approved Destination Status, remains no where to be seen, as Day shirked away the question.

He, though, did mention Canada is making progress in negotiate for a protection pact for foreign investors. He believes an announcement will come in April.

From an earlier interview with The Embassy, Day talked a lot about enticing the EU, India, Brazil… but it seems vague when he talks about China.

Meanwhile, the BC government is moving on much quickly. Two more BC trade offices have been opened in Beijing and Guangzhou, making the total BC trade office in China to three (the first one is in Shanghai).

Ida Chong, minister of economic development, says Chinese businesses coming in daily to ask about BC’s natural resources, the country’s tax system and investment opportunities.

On the other hand, BC won’t have the first trade office in India until at least after April.

China and Canada relation is simply discouraged under Harper administration, The relation will go no where, no matter how hard you and I are promoting the relation, it is because the relation has never in his secret agenda.

Canada is screwed, we have no international friends and live under the shadow of the U.S

Can somebody tell me what the hell Steven Harper is doing?

He seems very short sighted and too comfortable with hoping on US will keep trading with them.
The government needs to create more opportunities for the country and not just put all it’s eggs in 1 basket.

if Canada is just going to rely on the U.S forever it will never prosper and will lose out on opportunity to grow.

Is this the price of conservatism? maybe Canadians over look the high costs of a conservative party.
