It’s Joe vs Alice in Richmond

(Sorry for not updating. Am going to HK for a month… so much to finish before I take my annual holiday.)

Anyway, this’s just in:

Mason Loh loses his nomination bid in Richmond (see previous story). Joe Peschisolido gets it. Raymond Chan loses out in first round… rumour is that his ballots are then thrown behind Joe.

Joe didn’t expect to win. He wasn’t in the room when the results were announced.

Alice Wong should be the happiest person tonight.

The voters of Richmond have not forgotten how Joe Peschisolido betrayed the voters here. He is not an opponent Alice Wong should brush off, but I can’t say he’s in a good position to win either. Alice Wong has been a very strong and active MP in Richmond, a far cry from Raymond Chan’s under-performance. Advantage Wong.

Joe was not in the ballot room because he was socializing with all his volunteers and supporters!! This doesn’t mean Joe didn’t expect to win. All his volunteers have stay up nights and nights to help setting things up. Finally all the hard work is being paid off here!!

sn,will you still stay with CIV in your spare time during your annual holiday? we can’t do without you though i wish you a wonderful vacation in your hometown! i envy you having ONE MONTH holiday!!as a small potato here like me only can enjoy two weeks’ paid vacation a year.and i found it would be very difficult to ask for the leave if i wanted to extend my wonderful vacation:( this is one thing hard to tolerate…

this seat in richmond will be unsettling. alice will get one term. joe will get into office. mason after losing so many times should quit running.raymond may make a comeback if we get another minority gov’t situation.

lw: Even if the Liberals do form a minority (which is not likely considering Michael Ignatieff’s PR trainwreck and wishy-washy nature), I believe Alice will still hold the seat. Joe Peschisolido has lost the trust and respect of many Richmondites for his opportunism. That was only 7 years ago, and people don’t forget. Alice Wong has earned hard for the respect of the people of Richmond and has been a hard and visible worker in the riding, something we haven’t had in a long time. She is a fierce debate and also more likeable than Joe, Raymond, or Mason.

And Raymond Chan? The guy is a joke to many voters, flip-flopping on key issues such as the Chinese head tax. That’s why he was soundly defeated by a margin of 20% in last election. People got sick of him. He got huge boos at the debate at Aberdeen Centre. If he came last in his own EDA nomination, how do you think he’d fare among the electorate? You can answer that for yourself.

alice needs people like u who put too much faith in her so that her true abilities can remain untested. raymond has been treated unfairly for not keeping his promises but which politician does? alice wong? if so why don’t i see her continue her anti same sex marriage campaign. why she only does so with church groups? joe is a turncoat but he is a smooth operator he’s got the political smarts that alice does not have. so write him off at your peril. people do forget and they forget fast only raymond has been unlucky to get stuck with a group of self righteous hypocrites who can’t let go of the past.

I passed by Westminster Hwy/Minoru Blvd yesterday. There were a handful of supporters carrying JP’s placards, only one supporter for Mason, none for RC but he had dozens of signs on the traffic island. It confirmed my theory all along that crooks and liars fair better in politics, given that the politician-clown rather drags his opponent down by splitting the votes than to unite for the common good of the party.

why letting joe win won’t unify the party but letting the newly richmondized mason would? what makes u think mason is any better than your average politician in terms of character?? this guy just can’t win and his excuse he is too innocent?? give me a break

  10. sn

i think the main reason for mason’s repeat failure is his inability to recruit bright political animals. that’s ok if he’s innocent but i think he’s opened up himself a lot these years. but in order for things to sail, an innocent man needs to get help “professional” help. the party should help him get some political smart-axxes

  11. lw

the problem is he is far from being innocent. lets put in this way i will rather vote for alice than this guy. why should the party be helping him to get into power?? if he is not strong enough to do it himself he should just get out of politics.

lw, Richmondites will never forget what Joe Peschisolido did. Even my aunt who isn’t very involved in politics shook her head when she heard that he got nominated. “Political smarts” eh? Well I’m sure it was very “politically smart” of him to cross the floor. Definitely a vote winner (note the sarcasm). Anyway, it’s not just Joe himself that puts the Liberals at a disadvantage, it’s also the Liberals themselves. Even under Ignatieff, they don’t seem to be connecting with voters, instead resorting to empty rhetoric and infighting.

True, every politician is dishonest from time to time, but some politicians are much more honest than others. Stephen Harper’s government has fulfilled KEY election promises, like cutting taxes, giving childcare benefits, issuing an historical apology for the Chinese head tax. You may not like the man, but he is at least credible in that he puts the money where his mouth is. I can’t say the same for the Liberals, who promised abolishing the GST, promised more childcare spaces, promised reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, but never delivered.

By the way, your same-sex marriage argument is a moot point. The Conservatives in 2006 again FULFILLED their election promise of trying to re-opoen the debate in parliament. The bill didn’t pass, and that’s the end of it. It is by no means a case of Alice Wong not fulfilling her promises; it is rather a case of parliament rejecting the bill. That’s all there is to it.
