It’s China’s 60th anniversary.. did Canada say ‘happy birthday’?

(Photo released by the PMO; Harper met Hu Jintao during G8 in Pittsburgh)
The Conservatives might appear courting China in recent months — I’d say especially, reluctantly after the recession. The PMO even released a photo seeing PM Harper chatting happily with China’s president Hu Jintao in the recent G8 summit in Pittsburgh. Conservative propaganda machine boasted about that being a sign of a better China-Canada relationship.
Today is China’s 60th birthday. You like it or not, China is having a big party. While we all would say “happy birthday” to a friend, acquaintance, co-worker, or even a neighbour as a courtesy, I cannot find a word from the Canadian government congratulating their new-found “friend”. Leaders of Russia, the UK have sent congratulatory notes to China, and the US lit up the Empire Building in yellow and red to commemorate China’s birthday, though the action attracted much criticism from China’s critics (even George Bush Sr and Jr sent their regards).
Is it that difficult to say “happy birthday” to the communists?
- The Empire State Building is lit in red and yellow to honor the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in this photo taken from across the East River Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 in the Queens borough of New York. The color scheme has caused controversy among critics of the China’s communist government. (AP)
Maybe I’m wrong. But I’ve gone through all email releases of today and I’ve checked the foreign affairs website. If any of our reader could correct me, please don’t hesitate to leave your comments below.

sn,if harper forgot to say happy birthday to china, i have to say he is more stupid than obama though he attempted to resort to flattering chinese gov’t during current difficult period.that’s why canada has been heavily relying on the economy of its neighbour and was worst affected by its neighbour’s recession till today.if harper couldn’t wisely learn how to build up close relationship with big china,he wouldn’t succeed in his reign.
i watched a live television of grand celebration of china’s 60th birthday yesterday evening.i am very happy and honourable for chinese people and has a sense of grandeur about china! moreover i am proud of my chinese roots!
haha, just got this… fresh off email (now i believe rather than congratulating china’s bday in china’s time zone, canada prefers to do things in our own time zone):
this email was sent out at 14:19:
3 minutes later, at 14:22, the office of the opposition issued their own congrats note:
hahaha…harper is not stupid as i said before in one previous post.sorry cool guy!
there is a difference between birthday and anniversary. china is not 60 yrs old more like 6000 or 7000 yrs old. its the communist regime 60th anniversary. people who cannot tell reality from fireworks are most welcome to celebrate this event in grandiose fashion.
people who are dissidents in China normally get to spend this day and many other days in jail. but this day
they will get a few more visits from the guards just to make sure they won’t jail break so that everyone in china can enjoy the fireworks.
Phoenix TV (HK-based) had interviews with correspondence in New York, Paris, Beijing and the other one probably Taiwan and they all seems to comment positively about the event; especially from NY and Paris. And I know to hear from Canada, the best is to check here on the CIV website.
Suddenly, it feels like everyone’s changing compared to the mood when the west were attacking China on human rights, Tibet, Xinjiang, pollution…etc. Even Japan’s leader – current and previous one – shows friendly stance towards China already.
I’ve always know that China can be great and I hope it won’t decay and be consumed by corruption again.
The People’s Republic of China did not exist until 1949. The people are celebrating the birthday of the People’s Republic of China. So, it’s 60 years of nation-building of the new China.
China as a civilization dates back many thousands of years but the real modern nation started in 1949. It has gone through painful process of trial-and-error and folly in nation-building by itself; cut off from the outside world, with foreign hostilities and in bankrupt state left by the KMT when it fled to Taiwan island.
The Communist Party of China was a result of people’s power. The CPC was created in the history of China by the Chinese people. The rise of new China shows it’s the people’s victory. And the CPC attribute this to the people with the word “人民万岁” (long-live the people)
you are amazing taikor.you know much about chinese modern history and can read & write in chinese as well! i knew some singaporeans, malaysians, indonesians of chinese origin when doing business in shanghai.all of them can’t read & write in chinese though some of them can speak mandarin fluently.but you are an exception again!oh,i am not sure whether you can speak mandarin:P
I’m speak Mandarin best because I grow up watching & listening Singapore’s Chinese-language TV channels and radio stations. Though Malay-educated (father always thought missionary schools are still English medium but times had changed); but I learn to read Chinese from my brother, sister and friends who’re educated in Chinese. Other than Cantonese where i’m of Taishan origin, I’m also fully conversant in Hokkien a.k.a. Minnanyu (Taiwanese). Hold on… you from HK??
wow,you are language expert. you can speak so many different languages.cool! i came from shanghai.i only can speak three languages:mandarin, shanghainess as well as english(呵呵,not very well,捣浆糊水平):P i improved my mandarin dramatically during my first job as a lecturer of the university which i graduated from. when i talk to people in mandarin, most of them will think i come from northern china.i regard this as the highest compliment on my standard pronunciation and my straight forward character :P
Shanghai… interesting :) I plan to go there for the World Expo next year. The preparations with my friends already start now. We have friends and relatives there and my ex-colleagues in my previous company who’re posted in Shanghai and Taicang (a forgotten city where Zhenghe departed with his fleets to circumnavigate the world) are also there. So, it’s going to be fun. We plan to cover Shanghai, Suzhou, (skip Nanjing for next time), Hangzhou and Huangshan
your travelling plan sounds great! all of four cities are exciting tourist resorts and worth visiting.wish you a happy 2010 trip!
i am planning to go back for vacation after i write the citizenship test next year. i’m still not sure the exact test time until get informed from citizenship and immigration canada.hopefully i can go to see the world expo.
If the likes of ‘lw’ are so upset about this Oct 1 National Day celebration & partying, they could go decorating up themselves on Oct 10, or better yet celebrating the founding day of Qing, Ming, Tang or even the Qin dynasty.
I believe most Chinese, like myself, and some laoweis have been very happy with this occasion of Modern China.
As posted by sn, Stephen Harper DID wish the PRC a happy anniversary. Let’s all just calm down a little bit — Harper is NOT out to hate on China. I admit that while the Conservative stance on China has been poor in the first couple years of their term, they are improving drastically.
I want to wish all of you a happy Mid-Autumn Festival.
thanks j.you sent the kind wish after mid-autumn festival on behalf of harper minority gov’t?hahahaha…just kidding:P
infestation infestation alert . there is an infestation not of rats but of men and women at this site who are proud of the greatness of communist china in her perpetual hosting of parades and celebrations while brutally suppressing demonstrations , unless of course they are state condone.
when the PRC was first formed in 1949 there was true euphoria amongst many people in china. the corrupt KMT was removed and replaced by the idealistic communists. but as time went on the people had been betrayed and the celebration went from stoic to simply staged. if u are too young to remember the chairman mao era of celebrations just take a look at how the north koreans worship their leader nowadays.
but of course china has gone past that stage of colorful but boring celebrations. now its high tech china. and the latest anniversary is about showing off its military might Made in China high tech weaponry.
does communist china make me feel proud ? the answer is no. just like tallest buildings and fastest trains do not make me feel proud but dizzy.
is communist china insecured? absolutely. is there an infestation of chinese pride that is both blind and nationalistic. absolutely.
what can we do about it? i do not know about u but as for me i will stay as far away from infestation as possible.
“does communist china make me feel proud ? the answer is no. just like tallest buildings and fastest trains do not make me feel proud but DIZZY.”
how old are you? health alert .it seems you should look after the physical dangerous signals given out from the body.the best remedy is to strengthen the heart.you know a sound mind is in a sound body.so we all need to keep the body healthy & the mind clear to live happily and meaningfully.take care!
Through thick and thin, our Motherland has been the shining beam
Under one-party rule or democracy, we embrace your glory
We are your daughters and sons, your harmony is for everyone
Let us all chill out a little bit here. Relax and listen to some nice and meaningful music.

hahahaha…funny lyrics and wonderful melody ! i am just wondering whether we will get a perfect result if someone sings the song with chinese dialect .i remember one of my high school classmates is good at singing popular songs with shanghainese and yangzhou dialect which he learned from his relatives.he made us laugh fit to burst at our party time after time: )) all of us often miss him very much…

The very same statement applies to you too. “Is there an infestation of anti-CPC that is both blind, bias and discriminatory? ABSOLUTELY”
On whether I am blind and a radical nationalist? I strongly disagree. But that doesn’t matter for you who pursue a total anti-CPC stance. Which is why I say you’re irrational and extreme. I am for the following statement: “Under one-party rule or democracy, we embrace your glory”
taikor, when i read your previous comment and spotted “anti-CPC”… i immediately thought you meant the “conservative party of canada” hahahaha
