Censorship, Canadian (conservative) style
Talking about censorship… China? Small potato. This IS how western “democracy” works. Climate-change scientists feel ‘muzzled’ by Ottawa: documents Montreal Gazette — A dramatic reduction in Canadian media coverage of climate change science issues is the result of the Harper government introducing new rules in 2007 to control interviews by Environment Canada scientists with journalists, says a newly released federal document. “Scientists... 25,000 march against Harper’s proroguing of parliament
Protesters demonstrating against the Canadian Government's decision to prorogue Parliament march through the streets of Toronto on Saturday January 23, 2010. Prime Minsiter Stephen Harper has suspended Parliament until March 2010, with goverment sources saying that they sought the suspension to consult with Canadians stakeholders and businesses as to the next phase of it's economic action plan. (CP) 12,000 rally in Toronto, 3,500 in Ottawa,... [Read More...]
What Canadians are conerned about is determined by…?
OK, PM has determined that Canadians aren’t concerned about the Afghan-detainees-gate controversy. And he told us that we only care about the economy. Well, he’s really getting closer in thinking with the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP has always believed that as long as the people flourish economically, they’ll turn a blind eye to every ill of society. Surprise surprise. Torstar – Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canadians... [Read More...]
Canadians unhappy with Harper’s performance in Copenhagen: poll
Many also express dissatisfaction with the commitments made at last month’s global meeting on climate change. Angus Reid poll results – Canadians are generally unhappy with the results of last month’s Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found. (full report) In the online survey of a representative national sample of 1,013 Canadian adults, 28 per cent of respondents are content with the leadership... [Read More...]
Letter: Will GG continue the detainee investigation?
WILL THE GOVERNOR GENERAL CONTINUE THE DETAINEE INVESTIGATION? Will Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean and The Hon. Prime Minister Stephen Harper work with all concerned parties in the forming of an open and accountable Commission to investigate the Afghan detainee controversy? If they don’t it seems that democracy in Canada is not where it was in 1872. In 1872, a controversial prorogue shut down a Commons Committee investigating... [Read More...]
Taxpayers Federation’s 2010 resolutions for politicians
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released a list of new year resolutions. I think they are bright ideas :) (emphases are mine) Resolutions for 2010: Honesty First As the end of the year approaches many people take stock of the year that was and make resolutions for the year to come. If politicians did this they first would realize that there is much work to be done. The political year of 2009 in Canada was – yet again – marked too often by hypocrisy... [Read More...]
Harper kills parliament until after Olympics… what kind of democracy Canada has?
I’m very, very angry. Last year when the opposition threatened to bringing down the Tories with a coalition — which is completely legal and constitutional in Canada — Harper could still remotely, barely able to justify to ask GG for a prorogue. But this year… it’s absolutely unjustifiable… it really is an abuse of power. It’s clear that he is proroguing to avoid scrutiny on the Afghan detainee issues. And... [Read More...]
Harper in contempt of real democracy
OK, this is what one of the most developed western democracy would do in face of dissidence and accountability: shut them all up. Harper doesn’t like dissident noises; he doesn’t like criticism; he doesn’t like being advised, lectured and he doesn’t want his authority and power be weakened by the elected parliament. When he and his government is under an investigation, he just shuts down the entire thing and snobby walk away.... [Read More...]
Harper the de facto dictator
There are two pieces of commentaries in the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail lately that speak up my mind re PM Harper’s dictatorial style of governance. We’ve opened our eyes during our recent trip with Harper to China — on his and his office’s way of handling the media and the extent of the tight control of messages. I will elaborate in a later article. But first, words by the greater minds: Harper acting like an elected... [Read More...]
It’s Joe vs Alice in Richmond
(Sorry for not updating. Am going to HK for a month… so much to finish before I take my annual holiday.) Anyway, this’s just in: Mason Loh loses his nomination bid in Richmond (see previous story). Joe Peschisolido gets it. Raymond Chan loses out in first round… rumour is that his ballots are then thrown behind Joe. Joe didn’t expect to win. He wasn’t in the room when the results were announced. Alice Wong should be... [Read More...]
