China’s version of nationalism
Danwei picks up an ad showing how Chinese workers are determined to weather the economic downturn. The copy reads: Let the world know China’s power! Facing the financial crisis, we Chinese workers go into the battle stripped to the waist (i.e. bravely go into battle no matter what the circumstances), and overcome all difficulties. Read More →
Threat to a people, not patriotism, matters
I’m completely appalled by some comments made by Mr Cheuk Kwan to the Globe and Mail today in an article/discussion titled “Has Chinese patriotism changed?” I don’t agree with many points Mr Kwan raised but I respect his opinions. However, I cannot remain silent on his statements quoted as follows, which in my opinion, do not have grounds: … mainland Chinese, and by extension, Chinese Canadian immigrants often do not... Globe and Mail and ‘Chinese Canadian diaspora’
An article in the Globe and Mail (titled “Chinese-Canadian diaspora fostering bond”) today that talks about nationalism among overseas Chinese. The following is part of the article (and I believe many Canadian readers will once again question the “loyalty” of Chinese immigrants): For 10 years Cheuk Kwan, has been showered with praise by fellow Chinese Canadians for his regular appearances on community radio shows, where he... ‘Dual loyalty’ of Chinese Canadians
In the last week, I received three interview requests from the English media to talk about Chinese Canadian “dual loyalty” in regard to the Olympics and the other events (such as the Tibet riot). Only the Vancouver Sun publishes my answers (I really appreciate that… after hours of writing up). I’m thinking of publishing more of my responses in a later post. But I also want to ask one question: which team would British Canadians... [Read More...]
China blamed for master-minding patriotic protests
The Times of India published an editorial title “Counter View: Chinese have a right to protest“. Quite interesting. ….Although the protests may be stage-managed, as some have suggested, there is every indication that the depth of nationalistic fervour in China has taken even the government by surprise. Restraint is being urged at every step, though the government has stopped short of outright condemnation. In any case, these protests... [Read More...]
China urges control over nationalistic feelings
Just one day, China’s state-owned media have changed tones. Anyway, I’m glad that the Chinese government is realizing about the danger of irrational nationalism. That helps settle my previous worries. AFP — China has urged its people to contain their patriotism, in the first sign Beijing may be growing uncomfortable with a nationalist outburst over the Tibet issue that it has tacitly supported. A dispatch issued late Thursday by state-controlled... [Read More...]
China should be careful in making use of nationalistic feelings
The latest nationalistic hype of the Chinese inside and outside of China gets me worried. While I am angry about how the western MSM have been twisting facts to unleash their China bashing sentiments (and I’ve been quite vocal on that), I do not think stirring up extreme nationalism will do any good for China or the West. I agree that China’s foreign affairs ministry should ask CNN to apologize over a host’s comments calling the... [Read More...]
Former German chancellor concerns about Western misconceptions
Xinhua – Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and a leading German expert have voiced their concern over many westerners’ misconceptions regarding China, and some Western media’s biased and misleading coverage of the recent events in Tibet. “We see China in a totally false way, ” Schmidt said in a recent interview with German newspaper Westdeutschland Zeitung. The former chancellor’s remarks came as major German... [Read More...]
An interview with Macleans
I was interviewed by the Vancouver bureau chief of Macleans magazine last week. Here’s what they’ve published today on their online version. (I blushed when I read the intro :P) ————————————————————————- The Macleans.ca Interview: Susanna Ng An influential Chinese-Canadian blogger on Olympic protests,... [Read More...]
Pro-China rally in Ottawa attracts 10,000, organizers say
Close to 10,000 people rallied outside parliament hill in Ottawa yesterday. I observe that the mainstream media are not as interested in reporting this event as they did on the Olympic Torch run disruption last week. Many newspapers put that story on their front pages. For the pro-China rally yesterday, CTV did a report, so did National Post, Ottawa Citizen, CBC, and CP. I couldn’t find anything in the Globe, at least not the online version....
